Vacuum Pool Cleaner Spits Dirty Water

I have a Sand pool filter and every time I vacuum it splits out dirty looking water? We just opened the pool so there is a lot of dirt on the bottom. When we are not vacuuming the water that comes out seems clean but foamy. Is there any regular maintenance that I should be doing other than back washing? or chemicals I need for the filter? Or do you have any suggestion for the best way to open a dirty pool. Thanks for your help

After I opened my IG, i dumped in 10 gallons of chlorine and a gallon of algedide. Dirt water is sent back into the pool when the filter is jammed up with dirt. You need to let the back flush run for a couple of minutes. Dirty water is a sign that you need to back flush it. Once done, the water should be clear.
Also, make sure to test and maintain the water. If the water is out of whack, it will cause problems with the filter and hear. If you alkalinity is on the low side, buy a big bag of Arm & Hammer baking soda at Sam’s or Walmart. Much cheaper than the over-priced chemicals at the pool store.
When I have run into foamy water coming from the filter in the commercial pools that I have maintained, the sand has gone bad. I would check the condition of your sand. If it is oily feeling and clumpy, it is time to replace it. Also, when you are backwashing, make sure that you backwash until the discharge water runs clear for at least 3 minutes.
It depends on how old your filter sand is. If your filter is older then 5 yrs and you havent changed out the sand then its probably due to be changed. Simply use a shop vac and remove the sand and the lateral assembly then replace both with new parts as well as the O-ring on the bottom of the head so you have no leaks after.
If the sand is new then it could be your just not backwashing long enough usually you want to backwash a minimum of 60 seconds or until the little sight glass is clean and clear. Then rinse for a minimum of 15 seconds or until it also is clean and clear.
If your pool is super filthy on the bottom to start with theres a couple ways to go about it. If theres a lot of big junk use either your pool net or a leaf netter which you can buy at a pool store and remove the big junk first. Then add water to your pool and start your filter on waste instead of backwash and vacuum the bottom this will allow you to bypass the filter and dump the junk right out of the pool without contaminating the filter.
If you see a lot of sand after you’ve cleaned it the next day then you could have a broken lateral in your filter which means replacing the sand and the lateral assembly. If your water gets really cloudy with grit you can try using a high powered follocullant like tabex’s klear floc for sand filters which takes all the junk and dumps it to the bottom of the pool for cleaning. Dont use to much though or you will gum up your laterals.
If the water is foamy still you can try using a defoamer, balance your chemicals better perhaps, or use the same swimsuit instead of new ones when you jump in as detergents are left in the water after you swim.
Hope that helps
