Dirt Problem Under Above Ground Pool

Why is there dirt at the bottom of my above ground swimming pool? I had a Jacuzzi sand filter for years and i would vacuum my pool and it would be clean but then the next day the dirt would come right back in a few hours. So i thought i needed a new filter since the Jacuzzi filter was old. So today i went out and spent 300$ on a 16″ hayward pro series high rate sand filter. My pool had some dirt but not much so i hooked up the new filter and i vacuumed it. within a few hours the dirt was back on the bottom of my pool. What am i doing wrong. Did i not hook up the new filter right. did i not put the sand in correctly. Can someone help me please?

When you vacuum your pool using a sand filter you should back wash the filter after your are done. Follow the instructions that came with the filter. Basically you just empty the filter from the dirty water. Everything should be fine then. For more information on pool maintenance check this web site:

Pool sand often has small particles that will escape and float to the bottom of the pool. You can minimize this by taking any new sand you use and putting it in a large bucket. Fill the bucket with water, stir up the sand a few times, let it settle a little and pour off the excess water. Do this three or four times and then use the sand like normal.

Hi I’m not trying to take any short cuts sounds like the multiport valve but this article will most likely explain your problem and provide the correct remedy to fix it.

I don’t know much about sand filters, but I would make sure that the sand was screening the dirt properly by reading the instructions again making sure you did everything correctly. Try to understand how it works so you can trouble shoot it easier. Also, it could be new dirt if it was windy or if you used the pool. I am going to go with this, since it is a recurring problem. I don’t think it is the filters fault, but double check.

well their is often small particles of sand in the properly sized sand so that may be a problem that will soon go away. They are too small to be held back by the filter ports and slip through. you may want to manually remove this dirt as it slipped through the first time and may just do it again. however, is it covered? is the dirt being blown in?
